Greenwood Elementary School
Scott Kyle, Project Manager/Designer (while with BCWH Architects)
Mr. Kyle was the project manager/designer as part of a team that included a principal-in-charge, two intern architects, and an interior designer. This 78,000 sf, multiple-award winning project was steered by Mr. Kyle through, RFP, interview and contract negotiation, document preparation, team management, consultant coordination, construction administration, specifications writing, green materials research, and energy modeling. This green project came in under budget at $120/sf including sitework. Carefully designed exterior solar shading devices admit sun in the winter and daylight in the summer, while frosted glazing bathes classrooms in diffuse natural light, reducing or eliminating the need for artificial light for much of the day. Linear and compact fluorescent fixtures provide efficient, even light where necessary. In 2005 Greenwood Elementary won several awards for design excellence including: a Virginia AIA Merit Award; Richmond AIA Merit Award; State Excellence in Design Award, Virginia Educational Facilities Planners (VEFPI); and a Regional Excellence in Design Award, Council of Educational Facility Planners International (CEFPI).
